Why do we fear ghosts?
Ghosts have always been a source of fascination and fear. There exists in people the primal fear of the unknown, which has helped us to survive, to be cautious when stepping into unfamiliar territory. Ghosts also represent death. What exactly happens to us when we die? If we go somewhere else nice, why are the ghosts still here? Will we get stuck wandering about in some horrible place? What if a ghost appears to me? Will it harm me? These are common basic fears, and these fears have been strengthened through our storytelling.
But is there a basis to our fear? When applied to everyday life, what exactly is there to be afraid of? Some people say that there is more to fear from the living than the dead, this is probably true. Many people never quite make the connection between the facts that a ghost used to be a person. Just a person.
When people reach their adult years, most of us have experienced loosing someone they knew, or loved. So, if this person did not intentionally try to frighten or harm you while alive, why on earth would they try to do anything to harm you after death?
Some believe that ghosts visit specific places to have interaction with or visit the people they love. Some just seem to crave a bit of attention. I don’t know everything about ghosts, but I know one thing. Ghosts are only people, like you and I. When they shed their physical form, they do not become less human or less the person they were. Why fear them?
